Today, marks exactly 100 days until I teach my first English class in South Korea! 2020 has been a YEAR and it has definitely been faith building for me. With COVID-19, racial tensions bubbling over, widespread protests, and the presidential election (honestly, just American politics in general), I don’t think anyone could have predicted that the year would look like this when the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2020.
But 2020 was not without its bright spots. The game show I had filmed in August 2019 finally aired this April (I was on national television, y’all), and then there were some pretty stellar Korean dramas that were released this year. Dramas like:
더킹 영원의 군주 (The King: Eternal Monarch)
사이코지만 괜찮아 (It’s Okay To Not Be Okay)
청춘기록 (Record of Youth)
친구에서 연인이 되는 경우의 수 (More Than Friends)
스타트 업 (Start-Up)
There was also 우리 사랑했을까 (Was It Love?), which was pretty good up until the final episode (which was a total dumpster fire, but I digress). And last but certainly not least, I accepted a position to teach English in Seoul!
This past Tuesday, I signed a contract to teach at a hagwon and emailed it to my recruiter. The next step for me is to mail my documents to the school where I will work, but I’m waiting for the recruiter to send the school’s address. While my logical part of my brain understands that things may take time and there is still quite a bit of time, the irrational part of my brain is freaking out. In the past 48 hours, I may or may not have been thinking things such as “Why haven’t they sent the address yet?” “Did the school even receive the contract yet?” “There’s a short window of time that schools give applicants to sign contracts when offered. What if they didn’t get my contract and now my offer has been rescinded?” 😱
Yes, I am fully aware that I did go from zero to neurotic maniac in 6.2 seconds. My apologies 😊 . What I want is to control every aspect of this process and I can very easily see that that will absolutely not happen. But happily, I feel like I’m a little bit ahead of the curve. All of my documents have been ready to go since mid-October. Because I initially planned to apply through EPIK, I started my document collection process this summer. My apostilled FBI background check was the last thing I received back, which took the longest thing to acquire because of the pandemic.
And now we wait!
